POLYMYTHOS: THE ISLE THAT BLOOMS

The Isle That Blooms

Ⅰ. ALWAYS BLOOMING, NEVER HARVEST
July flowers bring, well, August flowers.

Another month has come and gone, and you may have noticed things haven’t changed much. Everything is still beautiful. There are still no signs of babies or prepubescent children or young animals.

In fact, if you’re paying close enough attention, you may have noticed there are no fruits or grains or vegetables that have come from the constant riot of color and pollen. Only flowers, always flowers.

You still have access to the city’s temple and the baths. The High Temple’s doors are open to everyone.

Some of you may still be dealing with the unpleasant side effects of the Ancient’s now dead and gone Flower Oracle, but it should wind down before the end of the month. Or maybe you already faced your demons.

Hiding out in the Temples for the rest of the month is always an option, but be careful not to get too stagnant. It would be a shame if your ScryWatch stays stuck on the same color forever because you, too, decided to stop growing.

Ⅱ. FLOWER MARKET FESTIVAL
CW: Optional Alcohol/Drug Consumption.
You didn’t think the celebrations would be over just because the Flower Oracle came and went, did you? There’s always a new event, a new thing to do, a new way to make some benefit off the Travelers who pass in and out of the Isle looking to take something away from this place.

This month it’s the Flower Market!

During the days, stalls bloom beneath the elevated buildings and in the empty center where the Flower Oracle once stood. There are flowers, of course, in buckets, arrangements, wreaths, crowns, growing in tiny little pots, made into cakes, salsas, and snacks! Artists will find pigments, paints, inks, dyes, and papers. There are perfumes, lotions, oils, soaps, and more. Spices and herbs are abundant; you’ve certainly never seen saffron this cheap. If you haven’t gotten enough tie-dye from the temple, you’ll find beautiful batik clothing, purses, and even jewelry. Everything is bright, everything is for sale.

At night, the stalls are all folded away and instruments come out. Little stalls sell flowery alcoholic drinks and did you know or remember that cannabis is a flowering plant? The locals certainly remembered to make the edibles. Careful, though, drink or imbibe and you’ll find yourself talking about the things you need that you cannot buy. The things you are aching for.

And you won’t stop until someone acknowledges it.

Notes:
1. If you want it and it’s made of flowers, it’s here. No drugs or alcohol during daylight hours.

2. The Temple gives a small amount of spending money daily. Save up and get fancy, or buy a little bit of everything.

3. There is a tiny group of unknown Travelers that show up for the market. They don’t seem to have access to the same network as PCs, but their watches flash green, blue, or purple. They seem to be avoiding PC Travelers and disappear into parts of the Temples that don’t seem to be open to our group yet whenever they get too close.

Ⅲ. POISON GARDEN
CW: Poisons, narcotics, ect.
As you wander the now familiar village, you will notice a new pathway has opened at the edge of the village. It leads to an area with a high stone fence and a heavy gate. A skull and crossbones are painted on the gate in bright white paint, but there’s nothing actually stopping you from opening the gate and walking in.

The garden is beautiful, but surprisingly formal after the chaotic abundance of the rest of the Isle. The paths are wide and there’s space between the plants. Each one is meticulously labeled with a stake in the ground.

Do you read the labels? How long does it take you to realize everything in the garden is toxic or poisonous? There are so many options from hemlock and oleander to aconitum and angel’s trumpet and beyond.

Welcome to a study on how not everything that's natural is good for you as you continue to wander the fractal paths. Of course, not everything that's poisonous has no purpose. By the opium poppies there’s a sign that tells you that you can choose to wander the deadly garden until it kills you or you can own up to a toxic habit or behavior that you need to deal with.

Notes:
1. In theory, a character could wander forever without touching or consuming any of the poisons. For plot/fun reasons, feel free to make it a little more difficult. And remember, some of your characters can be poisoned to death.

2. Acknowledging bad habits or a need for change in an honest way is very likely to result in a shift in a ScryWatch color. Remember, the Ancient is looking for growth and improvement, not moral perfection.

3. Characters can collect poisonous or medicinal plants but will be at risk while doing so.

Ⅳ. FLOWERY FIELDS FOREVER
Maybe you need to get away from the fuss at the market or just want to stretch your legs, but it’s time to explore the flowering landscape around the village. The villagers have baskets waiting at each of the outbound trails with the request that you come back with the basket full in trade for the picnic lunch they provide.

Wander the rolling hills and you’ll find a surprising amount of wildlife for an island without offspring. There are hummingbirds the size of chihuahuas, tiny pollinating bats, nectar eating possums, giant stingless bees, and more butterflies than you can shake a stick at. All of them seem entirely unafraid of humans despite being wild animals. If you get bitten or pecked, it’s your own fault.

As you fill your basket, you’ll notice patterns in what blooms. All kinds of plants bloom outside of reason and season and traditional need because the land is trying to talk to you through flowers. What did you need to hear? The villagers can help you translate when you come back from your adventure.

Notes:
1. The giant orchid mantises are still there! Thank Gideon and Harrow for negotiating a truce, so they probably won’t eat you. A mantis might even have a conversation with you if you ask nicely, (Quentin managed somehow,) and they have their own knowledge and worship of the Ancient.

2. Feel free to use any reference for plant/flower meaning. Here’s one to get started!

3. Don’t get too attached to any of the critters, they will stay here at the end of the month.

Bonus: music to watch the flowers bloom to.

A couple questions on the poison garden!

1 - To clarify, are characters required to acknowledge a bad habit in order to find the exit again? Are they instantly lost or are they okay if they turn around again immediately?

2 - Like with previous effects, will these poisons affect characters equally regardless of any innate resistance to poison?

Elenore Evans - OC

[personal profile] hostile_encounter 2021-08-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
II. Flower Market
During the day, Elenore alternates between staked out a tent of her own in the flower market and wandering the stalls. A month of exploring and experimenting have resulted in a variety of clothing, all dyed a reliable shade of black or grey, and a variety of weird herbal powders all carefully labeled in her very linear script. She's mostly offering trades of information or plant material as opposed to selling her products, all too aware that they will be leaving at the end of the month and there's only so much time. Even less that she'll be able to carry with her.

At night, though, she'd certainly be open to getting a drink with someone, if only to enjoy the music.

III. Poison Garden
Elenore has spent the last month split between trying to find the most interesting and useful plants on the island and trying to make them useful. Of course, she's going to take her gathering basket and open the door marked with a skull and crossbones. It's like it was practically begging her to come in.

She never even notices the garden swallowing her. Why would she possibly want to escape when the good stuff finally showed up? She's got her rubber gloves that cover her to the elbows and collection materials that vary from cloth bags to sealable bottles, and you can bet your sweet aunt Maybel that Elenore is carefully collecting materials while deliberately ignoring the fact that this appears to be someone's formal garden. It's rude and likely unethical, but she does not give one damn.

It might help if someone told her she was trapped, though.

VI. FLOWERY FIELDS FOREVER
By this point, Elenore knows how to travel in the hills. She's marked out paths of her own to get to a few very interesting plants. But this invitation by the villagers to go out and collect is new, and a little bit suspicious. Definitely not the time to head out alone. Spotting a person who looks like they're about to head out, she gets their attention.

"Hey, it's not good to go alone."

I. ALWAYS BLOOMING, NEVER HARVEST

There is something missing in Jennifer and it has been since she visited the Flower Oracle. Her Hulk is beyond her reach, and it feels like having a part of her soul excised. It's so strange to realize the part of her that had felt too wild and dangerous and entirely too broken had become necessary to her concept of herself. Part of her is missing. Everything aches and feels more dangerous, even in the soothing environment of the Isle.

So Jennifer spends a lot more time in the Temple. Curled up in small soft places. Eating sparse meals. Avoiding the people she knows. It's why she's curled up on herself in a chair, dozing and being chased by terrible dreams. If you get close you might hear her murmur 'Bruce' like it's the name of the ghost haunting her.

Ⅱ. FLOWER MARKET FESTIVAL

There's only so long hiding in Temple Jennifer can sustain without moving. She looks pale and there are dark circles that might as well be bruises under her eyes, but her body has finally taken over a little. It's good, too, to see the bright colors and stop to fuss over the little trinkets. She picks up a purple bracelet more because she feels guilty about having money to spend than any real desire, but it's something. Enough to get her to try the perfumes.

"Nope," she says putting a bottle down quickly, covering a sneeze. "Not that one."

ONE: around the isle
[ she looks healthy here in a way that she hadn't on carcosa, skin sunkissed and hair wild, lounging in a patch of sunlight not unlike a large cat. it isn't a white sand beach, but it's nice -- it's warm and it smells of flowers and she has seafood every night for dinner. sure, there are plenty of things to attend to back home and of course she misses leo and maggie and the kids, her cats, but as the days pass selina finds she has no real desire to return anytime soon.

maybe you've bumped into each other over the past month. maybe you've seen her at the temple making friends with its feline guardians or off in some corner where she's taken up weaving together flowers into elaborate floral crowns to keep her fingers nimble. maybe you just happen to be visiting the baths at the same time, 'cause time is irrelevant and we can always just borrow last month's prompts. maybe you'll find one of the new prompts to your liking... ]

TWO: the flower market festival
[ she is aware that she's earned a reputation back on carcosa and selina certainly isn't above stealing from the little guy, but you won't find her using her five-finger discount during the flower market. she's happy to help stimulate the isle's economy, woven bags overflowing with a little bit of everything hanging from each arm as she samples yet another bottle of perfume -- a little spritz here, a little spritz there.

she stops you as you pass, holding her arm out. ]

What do you think of this one? Is it me?

THREE: the poison garden
[ look, she's kind of been treating this whole thing as a summer vacation, so after an evening of sampling the market's after-dark offerings, she's not exactly on her a-game. a few fancy, floral drinks and just a little too much off a big ol' brownie she's still got in her bag later and her curiosity has gotten the better of her as she stumbles past the ominous gate and into the garden. ]

F-Fuck...

[ even cross-faded, she's a pro; she's quick to find her balance, catching herself before she is completely face-down in the dirt. the gate slams shut almost immediately behind her and, suddenly filled with paranoia, she climbs to her feet and turns to push the gate open only to find it won't budge. ]

Fuck!

FOUR: wildcard it!

A man in a red and black mask wearing a toga sits up suddenly from a patch of greenery near Elenore. Upon closer inspection, it is obvious that his proportions aren't quite right. While he is no longer the teeny tiny body with the huge bobble head, he is still a body that doesn't really fit the head size. Look, it takes time to regrow a whole body, alright? Also, his healing factor may not be working entirely up to code here, but that really isn't something he's admitting. Also, he's still abusing the everloving shit out of his own personal deus ex machina.

Like for example.

"HUUURRRGGGGGKKKKKKKK!!!!" Deadpool sits up and projectile spews a bunch of bloody vomit everywhere.

"PTEH, PPTEH, ugh, vomit tastes so bad, ugh, I hate throwing up, ugh." He wipes at his mouth with the back of his hand. "Contrary to popular belief, even if you have an amazeballs healing factor, poison can still suck. It just doesn't kill you. Unfortunately. Experiment failed. And here I tried to help the Ancient One out and sentence myself to die for corrupting the youth and their accompanying friendship bracelet colors."

With a wry look he holds up a plant, then tosses it away. "There's so much that I don't know. But now I know one more thing. Hemlock suuuuucks."

Sephiroth | OTA

[personal profile] unkindled_madness 2021-08-03 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I. Unknown Travellers / High Temple

[Sephiroth has little interest in the market, but the unknown Travellers are a different matter. He may not have been properly introduced to every Traveller in his cohort, but he knows he's never seen these individuals before, nor has he observed anyone sporting a blue or purple Scrywatch. Did the Ferryman bring them, midway through their time here? Is there any real meaning to be derived from their colors?

He's content to observe them at a distance, at first. But his questions really can't be answered without speaking to them, so he'll attempt to approach. Maybe it's the crowd, but that seems... strangely difficult.

When his pursuit eventually takes him to the High Temple, that in itself is also strange. All the previous month, it was hidden to him, and he thought it was something they left behind on Carcosa. Now, here it is again, as seamlessly as though it's always been here. He finds himself walking the hallways again in search of some change, but it even feels the same, like a place better left forgotten. The Isle that Blooms has slowly eased his usual tension, but he feels it coming back again, a tightness between his shoulderblades. Even so, he won't leave until he's checked every corridor.]

II. Poison Garden

[The High Temple isn't the only new area of the village. To someone who enjoys a potential challenge, the skull painted on the gate is as much of an invitation as the screams in the night when the boy went missing. Perhaps within is something more dangerous than child-eating insects.

Sephiroth is no botanist. Plants of any kind are rare enough in Midgar, and the fact that not all of these flora even exist on his Planet compounds the issue. He reads the labels per force of habit, but it takes him some time to realize what they all have in common. Well... they're only passive flowers and not malboros, so even if he's brushed past a few, it's probably fine, right?

A part of him wonders if there
are any monstrous plants, somewhere, in the deeper parts of the garden? Maybe he'll keep on a little while longer, out of curiosity.]

III. In the Fields

[On the average day, Sephiroth does go out into the fields, though he ignores the offered picnic baskets; he has gathered flowers exactly once in his life, and after the completely useless answer the Oracle gave him, he isn't inclined to do it again. He would get away from the flowers entirely if he could, but failing that, he can at least get away from the crowded market and the friendly villagers.

What is he doing if not picnicking? Most of the time, training. The machete is a far cry from his beloved Masamune, but he adapts to the lighter weight in his hand as he moves through the familiar forms. By now he's procured a pair of black-dyed pants thanks to Elenore, and he's shirtless as he trains, braided hair swinging behind him. In the pauses, he might cast a contemplative glance in the direction of any visible mantises. It might be a threat, or an invitation. He wouldn't need much provocation.

On rarer occasions, you might find him sprawled out reading one of the handful of books from the pitifully small lending library. Most of them are extremely mediocre. A few of them are definitely trashy romance novels. He's getting desperate here.]

It's very nice to have pants again, without having to touch those tie-dye monstrosities. He may have even said 'thank you.' But, she wanted more than gratitude, as any rational person would, so it's time he hold up his end of the bargain. If she doesn't want to go out into the fields solo, he can play the part of bodyguard, complete with machete tucked into his belt. He won't actually carry the basket unless she foists it off on him though.

"Do you believe it's any more dangerous now than it was?" He's skeptical, but it's a genuine question. If someone's sighted something besides the mantises, he'd like to know.

Deadpool has grown up a little since last month. Literally, not figuratively. Don't worry, he's still pretty much the worst. At least his Scrywatch isn't in the red, so there's that. Something something saving his new friend over his fantasy something. Also saving some kid, but really he was just in it for the hot naked werewolf and the mantid slaying. Anyways, the point is, he's regenerated a lot, but his head still doesn't quite match his body. It's noticeably bigger than it should be.

Clearly, Selina isn't truly paying attention to who she nabs for a compliment, because he is in no way her style. But he's more than happy to play along, because if the Catwoman notices you, then you damn well stop to notice the Catwoman.

"Oh DAHLING!!!," he gushes, "It is simply to die for. The accent color matches your eyes, and it is pretty much the perfect ratio of size to your body type. Not too garishly big, and not too mostly there to show off small. There's some real practicality there, you could hold quite a few...shall we say...souvenirs." He drops her an exaggerated wink as his eyes cut to some of the valuables that passerby have in all too snatchable places on their person.

He flaps a hand. "Why, you could say it's an absolute steal!!!"

[The garden is quiet and isolated, a seemingly perfect refuge for someone who hates parties. Sephiroth is still near enough to the gate that her commotion draws his attention. Characteristically, he offers absolutely no assistance for her balance problems, and on seeing that it's her, he would have turned and gone on his way... except for her discovery that the gate seems to be locked.

He eyes it warily, wondering if perhaps she's just pushing it the wrong way. After all-]

...are you drunk?

A: Flower Market at Night

If there's a fancy cocktail to be had, Jean-Paul's going to be having it. Several times.

Looking somehow crisp and cosmopolitan in spite of wearing the same riotous tie-dye as everyone else on the island, he can be found at the edge of the party sipping on a drink or chewing meditatively on a cookie or a cake.

He feels good at first. The growing compulsion to talk about the hole in his heart won't overwhelm him until someone actually speaks to him.

B: Flowery Fields Forever

He's avoiding the mantises after exploding a few of them. It seems wiser.

Wearing the shortest shorts known to man, Jean-Paul moves through the fields - sometimes on the ground, sometimes through the air - looking at the flowers and animals.

The smell of honeysuckle is so thick it is nearly cloying, and eventually he wrinkles his nose at it. "It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?" he asks whoever happens to be nearby.

Nope. Elenore does not like the sudden appearance of any unexpected person, especially not a masked one interrupting her work. She slips the specimen in its container and starts to back up. No reason to make the potential violence easy.

...Or, apparently, limiting how much exposure she's going to get to that fountain of blood and poison spewing from his mouth. That is just profoundly foul, and how did it make it out of the mask on his face in the first place? A little splatter is going to require a bath and some laundry. She should probably be more concerned about his survival, but there's a limit on what she can do with the tools at hand.

But he keeps talking. And complaining. And not dying? After consuming hemlock?

Healing takes time.
As a nursing student he knows this but it doesn't make it any less annoying, his wound from his run in with the giant mantis creatures is healing up nicely but he is young and impatient and would like it to be 100%.
Now.
Please?
He recognizes his impatience and decides that this is a good opportunity to and re-balance himself, so while many of his fellow Travelers are out exploring the island Carter decides to stay near the Temple. Specifically a little spot he has found where there's a small creek and a big tree, one that gives him enough shade to sit under and meditate.
Which is what he is doing now, or would be if a tiny pollinating bat wasn't fluttering around him.

"Shooo. I'm trying to gain inner peace here...."

Ⅱ. FLOWER MARKET FESTIVAL

It would seem that this island has an endless supply of flowers, just when Carter thinks he can't see any more different types he finds himself wandering through the Market and is suddenly lost in all the colors and scents. Intoxicating and joyful, he slowly drifts about until he spots a small stand that seems to be selling jewelry. It's here that he pauses, picking out a small antique looking pendant of an apple tree branch and holds it up for inspection.

"Is this too plain and boring?" He asks himself, and whoever happens to be near by.

She wasn't the only one who knew how to travel the hills, and David was by no means unfamiliar with them. Sometimes wandering in nature to get lost in absolutely messed up horticulture was the best way to not think about other things. Even the strangeness of being offered a basket didn't stop him. Though a voice called out and that made him stop.

In spite of himself he couldn't resist the first response that came to his mind. Too many video games he guessed.

⭕ FLOWER MARKET FESTIVAL

( Chloe appears to be in her element at the market. Ambling along, she inspects the wares each stall has to offer. Quite a bit of time is spent trying to barter with some of the stall holders in attempts to learn some of their recipes, with varying degrees of success.

A luxury she does treat herself to is a few art supplies that will be easy enough to transport. And then she also has to acquire a decent sampling of the herbs and spices because who knows if the next island will hold such treasures? And then there’s getting a few soaps in a variety of heavenly, uplifting scents in case anyone might need a little pampering gift during their travels.

Something else catches her eye. Something she can’t quite resist. A flower crown. It’s not exactly the most demure design that’s on offer but she tentatively reaches for it anyway. It’s not as though she’s going to be the only one sporting such headwear anyway. Before she can overthink it so much that the flowers start to droop, Chloe hands over her money. Placing the crown on her head, she smiles a little to herself. )

Well… You might be a bit much, but you are very pretty.

⭕ FLOWERY FIELDS FOREVER

( Gathering flowers is a winner with Chloe. True, plucking the blooms out of the ground is always little sad but the islanders make such beautiful things with them. Basket tucked under her arm, she’s content to wander and enjoy the nature surrounding her. For once, she hasn’t considered the why of being asked to collect the flowers much. Given the market, replenishing stock for the islanders seems logical. Or perhaps she just has other matters on her mind.

She’s distracted soon enough by the wildlife. A cautious distance is kept but that doesn’t stop her staring with clear wonder. One of the hummingbirds flits around her. Being sure to remain in place, only her head moves to track it, the expression on her face one of delight at the creature venturing so close.

There is, however, a task to be done. As she goes to start gathering, a possum pokes its head out. Taking a step back, she shakes her head. )

Don’t worry, I can see that this is your patch. I won’t be taking anything.

David was someone prone to wandering when he needed to think. Which, today he needed to do. That the wandering path happened to lead to the creek and tree was coincidence, or maybe it was meant to be. He couldn't help but smile at the man trying to shoo away the pat.

"And here I thought you were talking to me," David observed as he moved to sit by the guy. Maybe he could distract the bat.

[ Malcolm has been watching Chloe for a little while. Not in a creepy way. Analyzing human behavior is what he does for a living, and thus, he's a people watcher. Little does he know that the person that he's watching isn't human.

Chloe seems to be stocking up on a lot of practical items, which seems like a good plan. Spices and soap? Probably a good idea. Malcolm has picked up a notebook and some colored pens. He's contemplating an orchid, debating if he'll actually be able to keep it alive, when Chloe speaks. ]

It looks nice. Treating yourself sometimes is alright.
